At iAbacus, we understand that fostering pupils' personal development and wellbeing is at the heart of every great school, sitting alongside academic achievement. We also recognise that demonstrating this holistic impact effectively, in line with specific inspection frameworks, is a key priority for school leaders.
That's why we're excited to announce the launch of two new, expertly crafted templates designed to empower Subject Leaders and Middle Leaders. These templates, both focused on 'Subject Contribution to Pupils' Personal Development and Wellbeing', provide a clear, structured, and consistent approach for subject leaders. One version is specifically aligned with the ISI Framework for independent schools, and the other with the Ofsted Toolkit for state schools, allowing teams to evaluate and strategically enhance their subject's unique contribution to these vital areas of pupil growth.
Both new templates share a common, vital purpose: to help your subject teams articulate and improve how their curriculum, teaching, and wider subject activities nurture well-rounded pupils. Using the intuitive iAbacus platform, subject leaders can move seamlessly from professional insight to meaningful, targeted action.
The familiar iAbacus process guides users to:
Make an initial Judgement on their subject's current contribution.
Review Criteria deeply rooted in the relevant inspection framework to confirm that judgement.
Provide Evidence to substantiate their evaluation.
Analyse Factors – pinpointing what’s helping or hindering progress.
Plan Actions for tangible improvements.
While the core iAbacus methodology is consistent, the content and specific focus of each template are meticulously aligned with the distinct requirements of either the ISI or Ofsted frameworks:
1. For Independent Schools: ISI Framework Alignment This template is directly informed by the ISI Inspection Framework (effective September 2023, for inspections from September 2024). It guides subject leaders to evaluate their contribution to pupils' holistic wellbeing, as defined by Section 10(2) of the Children Act 2004. The criteria encourage reflection on aspects such as pupils' spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, their self-knowledge, self-esteem, confidence, respect for others, and preparation for life in British society – all key areas within the ISI's evaluative scope.
2. For State Schools: Ofsted Alignment This template is aligned with the Ofsted 'School inspection toolkit' and related guidance. It focuses on Ofsted's expectations for how schools should support pupils' broader personal development. Subject leaders are prompted to consider their subject's role in developing pupils' character, resilience, confidence, their understanding of equality and diversity, and how well they are prepared for life in modern Britain – all crucial elements of an Ofsted inspection.
Adopting these framework-aligned templates offers numerous advantages:
Enhanced Clarity & Consistency: Establishes a unified approach across all departments for evaluating and discussing personal development and wellbeing.
Inspection Readiness: Directly supports your school's preparation for ISI or Ofsted inspections by focusing self-evaluation on pertinent criteria.
Targeted Improvement: Helps subject leaders pinpoint specific strengths and identify clear areas for development within their curriculum and practice.
Rich Professional Dialogue: Provides a robust framework for middle leaders to engage in meaningful, evidence-based conversations about enhancing pupil outcomes.
Strategic Action Planning: Moves beyond reflection to the creation of focused, actionable plans that contribute to genuine improvement.
Articulating Broader Impact: Empowers subject leaders to clearly demonstrate and evidence the significant impact their subject has on pupils, beyond purely academic results.
These new templates are designed to be readily accessible. Current iAbacus customers with full platform access will find them freely available now in their template library, ready to implement.
